The Topic Explorer shows the same labels across all levels in all three datasets. Learn more about the Topic Explorer and the methodology behind it.
Display levels
See the general Display levels section for more information. These display levels and the labels for the topic boxes on each display level are the same for all three datasets.

Heat mapping
Specific heat mapping is available for each dataset to reflect variation in the selected metric across topics, such as percent of literature funded by NIH. In the Grants dataset, you can view heat mapping based on:
- % Human (MeSH): This shows the percentage of the extracted MeSH terms for the grants within each topic box that are considered clinical based on human Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms within the grant record. Learn more about MeSH terms.
- % Extramural Research: This shows the percentage of the topic box’s grant records considered research based on activity codes/mechanisms (research project grants, or PRGs). Learn more about Research Project Grants and their activity codes in the Grant Records glossary.
- % Training: This shows the percentage of the topic box’s grant records considered training based on activity codes/mechanisms (F, T, and K, primarily).
To learn more about the different grant mechanisms, visit the NIH activity codes page.
