Overview of Grant Records

  • Grants data in iSearch Analytics are sourced from NIH RePORTER, specifically using EXPORTER. However, because EXPORTER does not contain current grants data, data from the previous and current calendar years are pulled from RePORTER through a series of automated queries.

Data-Providing Agencies:

  • RePORTER is a repository of intramural and extramural NIH-funded research projects since 1985. Note: RePORTER also contains data from other HHS Agencies and government departments. Below is a chart of which agencies provided data and for what time period. For more information on the RePORTER repository, visit the FAQs page.

Update Frequency:

  • The RePORTER database is updated weekly.

Enrichments:

  • Conditions, Target, Chemicals & Drugs, Devices, and MeSH Plus are extracted using synonyms and normalized to their preferred form from Title and Abstract.
  • Organizations are normalized to their preferred form.
  • iSearch uses an enhanced investigator name search that better handles author name variations.
  • Abstract and Public Health Relevance sections are cleaned by removing boilerplate language.

Literature

Linking for Literature supported by HHS Grants comes from SPIRES, PubMed data, and PI Disambiguation algorithms.

  • SPIRES match case 3.5 and higher are used. Match case 3.5 is a match case 3 with a name match between the grant PI and the authors on the paper.
  • PubMed grants links are normalized using NLP techniques and grant number extraction algorithms. If necessary, remaining ambiguity from grant numbers are removed via matching PI names.
  • Disambiguation links are created via OPA's customized PI disambiguation algorithm and filtered by year.
Patents Grant awards are linked to Patents via extraction from the federal support section of patents and via ExPORTER. In addition, iEdison is also used to make patent - grant linkages.
Clinical Trials Grants are linked to Clinical Trials via awards and clinicaltrials.gov.
