Background
The records in iSearch Analytics can be viewed at three different display levels in the Topic Explorer. By default, iSearch will automatically choose the most appropriate level to display your set of search results:
- Broad: These are the most wide-ranging topics in the visualization. There are a total of 28 broad topics. Records that do not fall into any of these topics may be in the Unassigned topic (read more below; you can see records in this topic in the Accessible Table).
- Intermediate: These topics are more specific than the broad topics but not as granular as the narrow topics. There are a total of 141 intermediate topics.
- Narrow: These are the most specific topics available. Due to the nature of the clustering and topics themselves, some of these topic areas may be very small, or niche, whereas others may be larger. There are a total of 422 narrow topics.
Topic clusters were generated using a natural language processing technique called word2vec, and the topic labels were generated using artificial intelligence (AI). A general aid to help understand the concept of the three levels is below:
Note: The topic clustering is not hierarchical, i.e. the intermediate clusters do not fit within a single broad topic. And by default, the topic display level you see is also based on the number of results you have, so that we automatically show you the most appropriate level in the visualization once you perform a search. You can update this by selecting Display level in the dataset view (see below).
Any visualization, regardless of dataset or display level, will show a maximum of 30 topics. If more than 30 topics are captured in your results, the remaining topics can be seen by clicking the Accessible Table button at the top of the Topic Explorer visualization. You will then see a list of all the topic boxes in your results along with the number of documents and other metrics specific to each dataset. Topics are listed in descending order by the number of documents within the topic. The top 30 topics are shown at the top—these are the topic boxes seen in the initial visualization—and the remaining topics below.
Additionally, records with limited amounts of text to use for clustering (e.g. short titles and missing abstracts) have not been assigned a cluster. These records can be found in a topic box called “Unassigned” in the Accessible Table (see screenshot below).
Dataset results view
By default, you will see the Topic Explorer visualization view. If you enter a dataset without performing a query, you will see the Broad topics. As aforementioned, if you perform a search, the display level will automatically be selected based on the number of results, therefore, you may automatically be viewing the narrow topics only.
Note: If you selected "All Datasets", you will still see Broad topics, but you will only see the first AI label of each topic cluster. You can view all of the labels that describe that cluster if you enter a dataset.
Accessible Table View with Unassigned Topic
You can select the Accessible Table icon beside the Topic Explorer text to toggle to the Accessible Table, and view the topics adjacent to their metrics, as well as records which have been grouped into an Unassigned topic if there was not enough content available to group them into an appropriate topic.
