The heat mapping, or shading, within the Topic Explorer visualization reflects variation in the selected metric, such as percentage of literature funded by NIH awards, across topic boxes. The calculations are specific on your search results, not the entire universe of records for each topic. The available heat map metrics vary across the datasets, as seen in the Search Overview when “All Three Datasets” is selected from the landing page:
Each dataset contains relevant heat map options. Heat mapping is between 0-100% unless indicated otherwise (currently specific buckets exist just for literature metrics). Read the options below and click on the links for the dataset you are interested in to learn more:
-
Literature Topic Explorer Heat Maps
- Average (Avg) RCR, Avg APT, % NIH linked
-
Grant Records Topic Explorer Heat Maps
- % Human MeSH, % Extramural Research, % Training
-
Clinical Trials Topic Explorer Heat Maps
- % NIH linked, % Early phase
Additionally, heat mapping metrics can be viewed in table form for entire topic boxes using the Accessible Table. The Accessible Table is available in both the Search Overview and each dataset, above the Topic Explorer. The screenshot below shows the AI labels for broad display topic boxes in the Grant Records dataset, along with their heat mapped metrics:
Additionally, you can determine metrics for individual records. The narrow display level for individual record appl ID 10555124 is shown below, with the heat map set to view % Extramural Research. The visualization illustrates that this specific grant record is considered a research grant. You can toggle between the other heat mapping options to view the metrics overlaid on the Topic Explorer:
Alternatively, selecting the Accessible Table allows you to view all heat mapping results on a single screen/table:
The AI labels and fields used in the heat mapping are also included as export options. See more on how to download heat mapping data.
