The stemming filter changes the search terms from their plural form to their singular form using the following rules:

If a word ends in “ies,” but not “eies” or “aies”
- Then “ies” → “y”

If a word ends in “es,” but not “aes,” “ees,” or “oes”
- Then “es” → “e”

If a word ends in “s,” but not “us” or “ss”
- Then “s” → NULL
Stemming plural search terms to their singular form allows iSearch to recognize common root words and their various associated suffixes so a larger set of results can be returned. This means searching for “flies” also returns results where “fly” is mentioned in the record. Records containing “fly” are relevant to the search but may have been excluded without the use of stemming.
The English possessive filter removes the apostrophe 's' (‘s) at the end of words.
