Selecting across filters always uses the AND operator by default. For example, if you select from the search fields Agency = NIH alongside Activity Code = R01, your results will return NIH R01s only.
In some instances, you may wish to use the OR operator across filters. For example, you may wish to select applications where the Admin IC is AI OR the Funding IC is AI. To search for these applications, you need to use Search Assist (within the Search Assistance button) or iSearch Analytics custom field names. The custom field names can be found in the custom field page of the dataset-specific section of the user guide. The custom field page provides the names of the iSearch Analytics custom fields and example queries, e.g., entering adminIc:AI in the search query box would be the same as selecting AI in the Admin IC filter.
To search multiple custom fields with the OR operator, specify the text to search, then type in the Boolean operator OR along with the second search field and text to search. For example, searching adminIc:AI OR fundingIcs:AI will return grant records (ApplIDs specifically) where the Admin IC and/or the Funding IC is AI.
Alternatively, you could also type in AND to specify searching multiple fields for exact criteria. For example, searching adminIc:AI AND fundingIcs:AI returns grant records (ApplIDs specifically) where the Admin IC AND the Funding IC are both AI. This search is identical to selecting the values in the filter panel or simply using the search field buttons and typing AI into the search box.
Note: When using the Refine Panel, the default is OR (Any Values). If you want the search to use AND instead, choose the second option (All Values) after you have made your selections in the list and clicked Include or Exclude.
