The AI labels in iSearch Analytics and the official NIH funding categories (RCDC - Research, Condition, and Disease Categorization) use different methods to tag awards with topics.
iSearch Analytics topics are derived from an artificial intelligence (AI) process that captures the central tendency/themes based on descriptive terms in each topic. Subject matter experts (SMEs) have quality checked these AI labels to ensure descriptive labeling of the topics and to eliminate redundancy. The AI labels for each display level in Analytics are also made up of multiple keywords to help you understand the content of each topic box.
RCDC is a computerized process the NIH uses to categorize and report the amount funded in each of the more than 280 reported categories of disease, condition, or research area. RCDC only goes back to the year 2008, and categories are added/amended over time, e.g, at the request of Congress. Learn more about the RCDC process.
