Introduction
iSearch allows you to look at metrics of your portfolio of publications, like those identified in the predicted breakthrough below, to examine the research outputs, scientific influence, i.e. the most influential papers in that breakthrough, and clinical impact of those papers. You can also find associated people on these publications and see how they are connected, what field/topics they may be studying and more.
Background
Predicted breakthroughs are areas of science OPA has identified which are gaining traction through citations using an advanced AI algorithm (patent pending). These are areas of science/investigators/authors that may go onto win a Nobel prize for their innovative breakthroughs in scientific discovery...
You can view publications we have identified per breakthrough in iSearch by clicking on the breakthrough hyperlinks denoted as “See publications...” on the landing page and in the user guide: https://support.analytics.nih.gov/hc/en-us/articles/18037300403099-Historical-Predicted-Breakthroughs Once you have clicked on the hyperlink, you have a variety of data, metrics and additional visuals to drill into the portfolio of publications.
Using iSearch to drill into topics
For example, here are the publications you can explore within iSearch Analytics that have been identified within the “Inflammasome Signaling in Neurological Disorders” breakthrough.
https://analytics.nih.gov/login?redirect=/breakthrough/Inflammasome_05_2024
You can see in the breadcrumb that you are viewing those specific publications.
In the Topic Explorer, you can view individualized topics within that larger area of science. You can see some publications have more of a focus on molecular aspects versus others have a greater clinical focus by looking at the variation of levels on the Topic Explorer:
Clicking on a topic allows you to see the specific publications in that topic and read the abstract along with view other metrics for that paper, in the Record View. In the Results table, you can also see the papers for that specific topic are organized with the most influential at the top (with that paper having the highest RCR).
Reviewing specific publications
Clicking on the hyperlinked title in the results table, you can see the actual Relative Citation Ratio (RCR) of this publication, the percentile it falls in, if this publication has clinical citations, what clinical trials, patents or grants may be linked to this paper, and additional data about the authors.
You can see that the authors are also hyperlinked, which leads you to be able to view the person profiles for that individual.
This profile has their entire history of grants, publications, clinical trials and patents, along with a disambiguated name and name variations already prepared for you. You can see co-authors within an individual’s profile as well
Associated People and co-authors
Another way to see the people in your portfolio of pubs is to go to the Associated People tab. This shows you how many papers are in your predicted breakthrough search results as well as their history of grants and pubs. You can filter on people to see who has co-authored papers in your results and more.
When you filter on two authors to see their co-authorship relationship, the rest of the data on your screen recalculates, reflecting new summary statistics, and also Topics in the Topic Explorer.
Analyze in iCite
iCite will also help you see the influence, potential translation and citations of your publications portfolio as a whole, or individually as well. Simply toggle to iCite instead of viewing Topics at the top of the topic explorer. See the summary statistics of your portfolio on the left side bar already calculated for you.
Note: You can also get to this screen by clicking on the iCite button in an individual's person profile or Associated People to analyze their articles in iCite.
Refine panel and overview of your portfolio
The refine panel allows you to see distributions of your data based on specific fields, as well as filter to specific ranges of metrics, such as only highly influential papers with an RCR over 2 for example, or those that may have linked data.
You can also limit to specific years to compare how topics have changed over time. You can see in the iCite bar chart above, the publications as a whole span from 1995-2022. If we look at only those papers from the most recent 5 years of the breakthrough, you can see the topic with the most papers is: Neuropathology;cognitive dysfunction/impairment;aging....compared to the first 5 years.....
Connected datasets
If you wish to view linked data to your pubs portfolio, such as any linked grants, you can also use the View Linked Data menu to see that data in the connected dataset, and view specific metrics such as agencies that were awards for the breakthrough identified pubs:
