Perform Search
Background
iSearch is a powerful tool for creating portfolios. It is possible to generate a portfolio using a curated list of IDs for a given field. There are various fields one can use in order to find records in iSearch Analytics. These fields include Appl ID, PI ID, PMID, preprint ID, doi, clinical trial ID and more. The ID you are interested in may or may not align with the actual system ID of the iSearch record so it is important to know what fields are used to identify records, and how to properly search for them using the correct format to ensure correct results.
Methods
Determine the IDs to use
First you will need to determine what type of analysis you are performing. Does your analysis require you to find individual grant records, or are you looking for any grant record for a particular grant (in other words capturing all awards throughout the support years)? Or are you interested in an organization or person? If you are interested in literature, would you like to capture preprints, or only records from PubMed?
Below are examples of different types of IDs that can be used to assist you in finding the literature of interest.
- System ID is the unique identifier for each record in the Clinical Trials dataset and represents the Clinical Trial ID/NCT number
You can also use other identifiers if you wish. Some examples of these related to grants are shown below (Note: you will likely return more than a single record with these queries since they are not single record identifiers)
- Grant number
- Principal Investigator (PI) ID
- Linked data (Literature, Patents, Grants) *Linked data can be found across datasets
Format IDs
To ensure you will find the data you are looking for, IDs must be in the correct format (regardless of the search strategy used to find them). Below is a table of fields that can be searched and the proper format for the IDs in these fields. The table also includes examples of a Custom Field Search which is discussed below. More custom fields for data throughout each dataset can be found in their respective sections of the user guide:
| Field | Example | Custom Field Search Example | Notes |
|
Clinical Trial number
System ID |
NCT00001408 | id:NCT00001408 | This is the Clinical Trial/NCT number. Other datasets show this field as Clinical Trial/NCT number, not System ID. |
Perform search
You can perform searches in a variety of ways in iSearch Analytics. Use the following tutorials to help you decide which strategy is right for you:
